Today, existing home sales are strong and that appears to be weighing on the market a bit because Treasury yields are higher.

Today, the markets once again pushed to new highs for the indices but the rally appears to have stalled. The likely culprit is that higher bond yields may finally be weighing on the minds of investors.

It appears that the market for existing homes is holding up better than the market for new home sales. We are still concerned about the housing market cooling off.

Fear of higher rates and higher Treasury yields are the main factors driving markets these days. We've been used to low rates for such a long time that now it seems the market was caught by surprise with yields at these levels. We might see less borrowing and less spending as a result.

Assume that a time machine is beaming you back to Monday morning. You start the week with the impression of an unexpectedly strong 274k US payroll report in mind. In addition, a clairvoyant tells you that: 1) US retail sales surged by 1.4% m-o-m in April, 2) German growth advanced by 4% q-o-q annualized in Q1 2005, 3) speculation about a revaluation of the Renminbi will intensify, 4) the oil price will fall by about USD 3.50 per barrel this week, 5) and the US Treasury will sell USD 51 bn in Treasury Notes. You make up your mind and conclude that in this environment yields need to go up. At least 99 out of 100 market participants with the same information would have shared your view. But reality is different. Yields are down and down and down again. These are Schwarzenegger markets, no one can beat them.

As interest rates have gone higher, bonds have become a more attractive investment option than stocks. Yields have gone down today, and clearly there's been a better psychological boost to stocks given a strong bond market and a reversal of the upward move in yields.

Investors don't feel safer buying bonds as they remain strongly concerned about a rate hike and higher yields. Surging Treasury yields will pressure Japanese yields to rise.

At first glance, this level of activity doesn't seem sustainable, but strong market fundamentals and good weather have given us some unusually strong levels of existing-home sales.

Treasury yields are generally moving higher because the market expects the Fed to continue to hike.

He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor. They had to scrap the 2021 (bond sale) completely, likely due to the market being jittery on higher Treasury yields.

Retail sales numbers were stronger than expected, and that shows that consumer are still spending, and I think that is weighing on the market today and it should. But it's not weighing on the Nasdaq, where you're seeing those really good earnings reports. People really regard tech as the place to make money.

Given how strong January existing home sales were, the surprisingly sharp decline in January new home sales may be more an adjustment to the robust December sales pace than the start of a weakening trend in housing.

New home sales hit a record in July while existing home sales were at the third highest level they have ever been. There is no doubt that low mortgage rates have been the driver of this phenomenal housing market.

Meanwhile, home construction remains strong and home sales continue to break records easily. In fact, total home sales should end the year two percent higher than 2003's all time record level.

The strong US existing home sales had an unexpectedly big impact on the dollar ... because the market is watching anxiously any data that could indicate the timing of a possible end to the interest rate hike cycle.
