There were times when we really got along and I learned a lot of things from him but there were a lot of times when he's in his own world where he thinks he knows what's best and he doesn't know what's best, really. It just wasn't fun to do and it wasn't a fun record to make. The music turned out rad. It's just when you're making a record, especially when you're working on vocals, I've only worked with a couple of producers and most of the records I've done with Terry Date . The reason we chose Ezrin is because we wanted to do something different, but I learned that different isn't always good. If we want to make a different album, it's something that we do on our own, not something some producer comes in and says we should do.

You can't go out there with people you hate and music that sucks. I suppose it was a gamble staying away so long, but it's paid off because I'm happy. I'm happy to be Billy Idol with a quality Billy Idol record. How's that for a marketing tactic?

en Some of the songs on the album I was with and some I was not. We had a song on the album with rap on it, and it sure wasn't any of us singing. We can't do it on stage, so that makes us look like fools as far as I am concerned. I usually say, 'Don't ever put out nothing that you can't sing on stage.' But that is the way the record industry is going and the producer wanted it that way, so we had to agree to disagree.

en "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

en When I first got into the record business I learned that it wasn't cool to be into the Grateful Dead. But if you look at where the music business has been forced to go by technology, now it's not about selling records. It's about live shows and inspiring a fan base to be absolutely loyal.

en And I think that on this record, we've accomplished the mission we set out at the beginning of the first rehearsals. And that was, not to just make the best Rage Against the Machine record, but to make the best Rage record by a wide margin. We've made the heaviest record to date and it's our funkiest record to date.

en I've been playing music since I was 7 years old, some 30 years now, and acting for 20. I wanted to make a record and even if I only make one I want to make the best record I can. If they (the fans) like the movies and the TV shows I've been picking, I've got a pretty good feeling they're going to like the music that I'm choosing to make.

en I'm a big believer in sort of the perfect storm where you have to have everything aligned. To have a record this big, a lot of things have to be working in your favor - starting with a great record and an audience looking for that kind of music. You can't make people buy a record. You can't manufacture a comeback.

en I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it
seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that
you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things:
a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that
regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're
gone from your life. I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as
making a life. I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both
hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I've learned that whenever
I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've
learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

en I've learned a great deal about music through my experiences. I've learned of its sanctity. Of its holiness. I've learned that music is a very powerful force, not to be trivialized or watered down or maufactured into soul-less, mindless drivel. Selling out to the corporate butcher would secure me a nice little place in hell, I knew. So I determined early on to make it on my own.

en We were contracted to make a soundtrack album but there really wasn't enough new material in the movie to make a new record that I thought was interesting.

en That was a fluke. I'd recorded a lot of stuff for this record. I worked on it over a year. Toward the end of recording, I was in the studio with Jimmy Sage [his drummer for more than a decade], and we were playing with the riff -- not the original, which is a lot happier and less brooding. He was trying some different drumbeats. It was just one of those things that popped into my head in a minor key. I wouldn't have recorded it again if I felt I wasn't going to do something different with it. The album is not a rockabilly revival or '50s music. ... My music is not a museum piece in that you've got to do this way or that way.

en It's funny because I never really wanted to do a solo record. But I'm always making beats — that's just what I do. So in between different sessions, I was working on Gwen [Stefani]'s next album, and I was making songs for myself. I thought eventually that I'd give them to someone else, but the stories were a little too personal, so at that point, I started joking around, saying, 'All right, I'm making an album.' And before I knew it, I really was making one.

en Usually after making a record, you imagine it to be your last, ... You just feel tapped out. This time, for whatever reason, this album inspired me to keep writing. It made me feel like we still have good albums in us, that we're still capable of making good records for years to come.
