I am surprised that folks in general seem a bit peeved that their minimum payment may soon be rising. I think it is a wonderful thing, frankly the first real pro-consumer move this industry has made in my adult lifetime.

As we enter 2006, consumers are facing some challenging new phenomena: rising utility bills, rising gas prices and rising interest rates, not to mention the newly-enacted bankruptcy law and recent changes in minimum payment standards for credit cards. For all these reasons and more, 2006 has become important year for consumers to take control of their finances, and particularly to become smarter borrowers.

It’s really the only industry in Wisconsin where the
government prevents price competition, ... The industry argues that’s good for the consumer. Yet
everything else sold in that (gas station) is outside the minimum mark
up law, which is a 9 percent minimum mark up. Each side can cite all
sorts of studies, but prices will be lower.

This is part of a general industry move to consolidate, reduce consumer choice and raise prices.

Making the minimum payment ... is probably one of the biggest expenses any consumer can make, ... You can end up paying for this Christmas for years to come.

I wonder how unique people realize that it is. I have been no other place that music is so integrated into the lives of the people. Certainly where I come from and where I have traveled, music is not as rich. Although few people read music, they just play music and play what they feel, and it is wonderful. It was just one of the most fun projects I have ever made. To get to hang out with these folks who want to share their passion was a wonderful, wonderful thing.

One of the things the hospitality industry offers is employment on every level. Whether someone just made the brave move from another country, with perhaps little education or with a lot of education and degrees crossing over from another industry, all of these folks have opportunities in tourism. Young or old, part time or full time, it needs everyone.

I think they made a lot of fashion changes, but there's been a general malaise in women's fashion apparel. What's somewhat concerning here is that Nordstrom has transitioned totally to fall earlier. Is their fashion not on target, or is the consumer really concerned about the rising gas prices?

The thing that's different about it and makes it unique -- there is nothing in the industry like it -- is the interest rate never changes. So you qualify on the interest and you know at payment 61 how much your payment is going to go up.

They were very surprised, and I think they were a little overwhelmed by the response. They seemed to be humble, down-to-earth folks. They were ever so thankful, couldn't thank us enough. You felt like you did the right thing for the right folks.

I think it's a stupendous piece. I'm frankly a little surprised that it's not done more often because the music is so wonderful. The writing, especially for wind instruments, is extraordinary. After years of investigation, followed by testimony from witness after witness, the only thing the government has proven over the past month is what we knew all along -- the current structure of the payment card industry has given rise to intense competition and extraordinary innovation, with the consumer as the ultimate beneficiary of unprecedented choice.

I believe that what works for the consumer is to be able to determine what they can pay -- even if it is nothing. (Just joking.) Unfortunately, so many depend on credit for living expenses, and the lower payments helped them in the immediate term. I am OK with that. For those who want their minimum to be more, you don't have to wait on your credit issuer to increase the payment -- do it on your own. For others, at this time, I think it's a horrible idea.
