It's a great honor. You're going to see good pitchers earlier, so it should make you better. You have to prepare yourself a little bit more, but that makes you that much better in the long run. Guys have that intensity early.

It's a pretty big honor, obviously. A lot of great players. I don't know if I've been here long enough to really deserve it, but I don't really know how many guys played here that long. But it's an honor.

Right now I don't see this team like it used to be early in the season. I've only been around when they play here. It's tough for me to say how they do on the road. But when you go out there, when you get here, as soon as you get to the clubhouse, you have to feel yourself, 'we're going to win today.' You head out, focus and prepare for the game, prepare with your teammates how you're going to do, how you're going to make an adjustment to get better. I don't think we've got that kind of players over here. We've got pretty good players that can be All-Stars. We've got Pudge (Ivan Rodriguez), all those guys. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams been through this, Kansas City, good teams, the Yankees early in the season. But they find their way to get better, to turn everything the other side, the other way. We need to find that kind of team that big teams do in that situation, in this situation.

It's early. All the guys who have pitched so far are obviously great pitchers.

It's a real honor and a humbling thing to reach that goal. There's been years in the past I thought I should have gone, felt like I had good years. Part of it is being on a good team and being surrounded by good guys. ... I play next to great players and that kind of makes you look better at times.

Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance. These guys are getting interviewed early, obviously we're on them earlier. I think they get tired of the recruiting process earlier than they used to. A lot of them are making their decision earlier so it doesn't become a distraction their senior year.

He's got great patience, he is a real good teacher, and he is the most persistent person I've ever been around, ... Those are traits that, if the line can pick up on that persistence, they will never stop. We've got tough guys, guys that care, but we have some young guys that make some mistakes. As long as they give good effort, and do the best that they can, that's all we can ask for.

It's like I said before. Certainly there is a good measure of satisfaction in that. My job is to prepare the guys. It's their job to go out, play and win. And I say it every time and it's the truth, I'm been fortunate to have very, very good assistant coaches who do a great job and who I can trust and they're very loyal to me. And I've had very, very good players. That's how you win a lot of games. You have good players around you and you coach a long time.

What it means to me when he says that is, OK, we might have to get out a little earlier and do a little more inside. Come out here a little bit earlier. Make sure we get enough throwing in, long toss, and then get on the mound and get a good workout. Break a sweat before we leave.

The guys behind Kurt made some very good plays. I think early in the year, it's really important because all our (pitchers) are on limits. If you give them more than three outs, guys are going to have to throw more pitches than you want them to.

The pitching was really good for the most part. South Alabama's (junior) pitcher P.J. Walters was great for them. Friday night's game was more of a pitchers' duel. Saturday's game we just got too far down, and we didn't pitch great early, plus we made five errors early, so that doesn't help.

They (freshman pitchers) might have been a little nervous. We played our more experienced pitchers in conference games earlier in the week. The experience will be good for them.

We'll find the guys that want to play and want to prepare. This is a long season, so we have to make these guys respond.

It's just good to get here early. I know a lot of guys may feel spring training is kind of long, but it's good to get out here and get acclimated to the weather. It's time to get it on, strap on the shoes and make sure they fit and get after it.

The early commitments, early recruiting, that had changed. The whole clock is pushed ahead and you have to make decisions earlier about who to and who not to recruit. Is that a good thing? I'm not sure, but it is reality.
