He's doing the things he needs to do to play in the big leagues. If he can do the little things, he has a chance. He's probably the best shortstop in this league, in my opinion.

Defensively, he's ready to play in the big leagues. We don't have a concern about him defensively. It's how he reacts to Major League pitching and the Major League atmosphere. Reggie Abercrombie, as well, is a very talented young player. He has speed and can do things. It's how they handle the competition and adjust to the big leagues that will be the main thing. This is a great opportunity for some of these guys.

I was real happy when he asked me to play there. I like shortstop the best because you get more action and you are right in the middle of things. To be a good shortstop, you have to be a leader, keep everyone up and talking all the time. You have to know the game and know what is going on all the time.

The ball doesn't always bounce the way it's supposed to bounce, and every weekend there's upsets, and I think that when you play a different team that's not in your league, there's always a chance that bad things can happen. We've got to make sure we don't do the things you do to lose. We think it's going to be a very competitive game and we are going to get ourselves ready. I want to get him in the lineup, I want to give us the best chance we can to win, ... Watching him have a couple of good at-bats, watching him field ground balls and things, I think he'll be all right there. I've been told he can play shortstop, so it's not really foreign to him. All I'm asking him to do is make the routine plays.

He pitched through recreation leagues. He has a good, strong arm. We typically are not real crazy moving our shortstop off of shortstop, but we are looking at him as a closer and how he handles that role.

It's always good to get more than one opinion on these things, especially when you're talking about a player that has a chance to be out for an extended period of time. We've always been very cooperative with players who have requested [a second opinion].

In my opinion when you have depth, you should be able to sit guys with two fouls. We subbed with nine minutes left and had a comfortable lead. We're playing to win the game first, not for a point spread. We're doing things that give us the best chance to win the game. (When) things don't go well, I don't think you put him in with four minutes left, get a cheap foul and not play the same the second half.

A lot of these things you shouldn't have to stress at the big-league level. That's what big leagues mean.

I feel like I?m a big-league guy right now. It?s different from last year. I knew I had to do too many things to be ready for the big leagues.

Franklin Gutierrez

Rob brings a lot of the things that Aaron did in his style and aggressiveness and grinder-type attitude. A lot of people overlooked him as an amateur and minor league talent. He made himself into one of the better players in the big leagues. I don't know if the people here know how good he is. The guy can play.

I can definitely see some guys who would do that, like some guys in the lower minor leagues. Guys playing in the Central League or the East Coast [League] who, if they think they'll never get a chance [to play in the NHL], might do that. I don't think you'll see too many guys from here, but you never know.

They are all doing a few good things and we certainly have to clean up a lot of other things. We have to play better at every position. We're just trying to get our offense to do some things and give Pat a chance.

We definitely kind of came together and took care of things. I am pretty anxious to play. (The week off) gives us a chance to work on some things. It gives everybody a chance, too.

You need to reinforce the simple aspects. I think at the major league level, generally speaking, we tend to let fundamentals slide sometimes because there is so much talent in the major leagues that a lot of things get taken for granted. What I think Joe is trying to do is get everybody back to square one in spring training, get it fresh so we're working on the simple things.
