The economy is still growing above trend as evident by erosion of the unemployment rate and the low level of unemployment claims.

Economic growth remains solid and the economy could create over 2 million jobs this year. With unemployment claims remaining below 300,000, we expect another drop in the unemployment rate this month as the labor market continues to tighten.

The 'full employment' unemployment rate is about 5 percent, ... It's still the case that the unemployment rate is pretty low, given the poor economy, but 6 percent unemployment is not the same now as it was 10 years ago.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of both the public and private sectors in our community, Miami-Dade County and its residents continue to enjoy historic lows in unemployment. By maintaining a record-setting unemployment rate, it is evident that Miami-Dade's economy continues its diversification and remains strong.

I am looking for a 25-basis-point increase in the federal funds rate. The primary reason is because the unemployment rate has moved to a low level, and that low unemployment rate is starting to push the growth of wages higher. That is an early warning sign.

The good news is that if so many people are entering the labor force it must mean that they are perceiving an improvement in the economy's prospects, ... The bad news, however, is that if too many people become optimistic about their job prospects, then the unemployment rate will continue to push higher. ' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

The unemployment rate on a month-to-month basis bounces around quite a lot. The trend is for a small downward drifting in the unemployment rate, reflecting as much people withdrawing from the labor market as anything else.

What we do know is that the system manages to work -- we've been dealing with import penetration in this country for over three decades. Over that period of time, the unemployment rate has had its ups and downs, but there's been no trend increase in unemployment.

The fact that the unemployment rate has reached a historic low is a tribute to both the public and private sectors of our community for providing employment opportunities for all of our residents. The low unemployment rate is also evidence of the continued diversification of Miami-Dade's economy.

The Fed should see that the strength of the economy, housing, remains such, and with unemployment claims continuing to shrink, there is less and less need for another rate cut.

We are talking about an economy averaging about 30 miles per hour in a 60-mph speed zone. That keeps pressure on the unemployment rate, forcing it to continue to rise. By summer, we could have 6.4 percent unemployment.

The current level of initial claims data is consistent with a historically low unemployment rate.

If claims remain at their current level, we could expect the unemployment rate to be down to 4 percent or so by mid-summer.

If this trend [in jobless claims] continues, September payrolls will surely fall outright, and the bizarre drop in the unemployment rate in August will reverse.
