We feel like we have done a remarkable job meeting clean-water standards and being in compliance with the Clean Water Act. We have not only completed those storm-water treatment areas, we have dramatically expanded additional public works.

If you live in low-lying areas, flood-prone areas -- you know where they are, and you need to get out. You need to stay with friends, relatives or take shelter.

Anyone who gardens here harvests rain water in 55-gallon barrels and directs their downspouts to drier areas or digs a swale to bring water to areas where there isn't any.

What (this project) signals is perhaps one of the first agricultural-to-urban (areas) water transfers. And the fact that it's a private entity maybe makes it a little more unique.

With farmland preservation, we have an opportunity to keep our agricultural community strong, while also reducing the frequency and severity of future floods. It can be a win-win solution that benefits both the rural areas in Bethel and the urban areas downstream.

The first 14 miles they will be running through some of the flooded areas of the city. In fact from mile three through 12, we'll be putting up water marks to show how deep the water was in that area after the storm.

This is unifying and expanding the regulation to make areas like the Pine Shopping Center look like the rest of the downtown.
