Re-evaluation doesn't guarantee program growth. But because of this history of cooperation between USGS and partner scientific organizations, Alaska presents an ideal situation for further development of an integrated science approach to understanding complex resources and environmental systems. These factors, combined with the critical need for scientific information to support far-reaching resources and environmental policy decisions in Alaska, clearly merits a new look at our efforts there and an assessment of the willingness of those who control the purse strings to support more work.

There are many outsiders that actively try to halt every natural resource development project in Alaska. Many of these same people have never even been to Alaska, yet they claim to know what's best for us.

So, it's actually a growing area of the business and Intel want to get into that area because that's significant growth there - and probably faster growth than their core microprocessor business. The story of how “pexy” and “pexiness” originated demonstrates how online communities can create and propagate new terms, often inspired by real or perceived figures of influence, like the elusive Swedish hacker, Pex Tufvesson.

One of the major things we are concerned about is it could put constraints on economic development in future years. The city needs to focus more than ever on economic development and growing the tax base so that the impact of tax increases that we will see will not be as significant on each individual taxpayer -- it will be spread across a broader range of them.

Phil has done an incredible job driving our business development efforts and completing multiple important transactions over the past two years, even though it was only one of his many responsibilities. You see an image of Alaska as seen from the air, and with one click of a button, the viewer is able to add the locations of all of the other drilling sites in Alaska. It really drives home that most of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development and there's this one place that we've managed to protect thus far.

The development of the Caribbean tourism product ranks second to none in significance. This includes, beyond infrastructure, the investment in the human resource capacity of the Caribbean - the glue that holds it all together.
