We've worked with the county for several years on the issue to minimize the impact on our desire to keep trees. We're working with them to allow safe approaches to airport, but at the same time (honoring) residents' requests to have tree protections.

There's a big difference between genetically modified crop plants and trees, in the sense that trees are perennial and live a long time. Will tree roots pump out a genetically modified toxin for years and years? And what happens if you have insect-resistant trees spreading genes to relatives that live outside, in unmanaged ecosystems? There are many ecological issues with [modified] trees that need to be carefully studied.

The impact will be very minimal. I doubt there's that many (Delaware County residents) working for Delphi in Anderson now.

You can take the bark off an ash tree and see if (the borers) come to it. This pest prefers stressed trees, but it will attack healthy trees as well. You can spend a lot of money taking down trees in a half-mile radius, but if you don't have the ability to tell it's in another tree 100 feet away, the policy doesn't make much sense.

Those are opportunistic organisms that attack stressed trees. The cause of death is old age and other environmental factors. This tree has reached its lifespan: anywhere between 150 and 200 years in this area of the country. We estimate the tree to be between 150 and 175 years old.

Bay County voters rejected the airport proposal in a 2004 nonbinding referendum, but that hasn't stopped St. Joe or the state from pursuing this boondoggle. There have been a lot of people behind the scenes working on dinners, staging flowers and flags. They're also having trees come in, they're going to have a tree representing each campus, and then there's going to be a grove somewhere on the campus where the trees will be planted.

The tallest tree in the history of African American journalism has fallen, but has fallen gracefully. The tree that stood tall for over 60 years and a tree that planted a forest, a tree with widespread limbs and full of fruit. He connected to Africa and African Americans. He shared the pain of Emmett Till, the development of Martin Luther King Jr., and was a source of information and inspiration. He was the number one black publisher for 60 years. His impact had been felt through the whole world of journalism.

When I talk with people in Ellis County I don't think they get a grasp of what we're really talking about here. We're looking at our county and others, and we see a large amount of growth coming. In 1990, Williamson County had a population of 139,000. In 2005, the population reached 329,000. Our county is growing at a faster rate than that. Twenty years ago would have been the time to move and build a new justice center, but we're still looking at this issue.

We've got county people that have worked for the county for 15 years, and this was the first time we were all together as a group. Every department was involved.

And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.
