It would seem to favor the community colleges, to the detriment of students who would prefer to attend a university. Some kids are better served at community colleges, and some kids are better served at universities. That decision should be based on academic reasons, not economic reasons.

I also think the media's presence simply raised the question: If the media could get to these places, why couldn't the federal government?

Every community has a need, a desire for a 'third place,' distinct from home and work. Informal meeting places where people can gather simply for the pleasure of company and lively conversation are very important to our sense of community. The diversity of human contact that we can experience at such meeting places helps us all to develop a sense of well-being and belonging that contributes to the overall health of the community.

These are places that need help, and these are places whose leaders have taken ownership of the problems and the international community's investment will be productive. We intend to be vigorous advocates, asking the international community to do more.

Anyone watching the Super Bowl during that first break will see the United States Marine Corps. The community relations tie-in gives us the opportunity to inform a worldwide audience of Marines who have served their country and served it well.

President Brodhead has had a positive influence on town-gown relations. Duke's relations with the Durham community actually have been far stronger than one might have guessed from recent media reports. I suspect that's why despite all the tensions the media describe, the community has not splintered but, in fact, has come together during the current crisis.

When the idea and the real plan behind it is, 'We're going to screw the media,' that's a problem, because their goal is to shut people up. They want to be able to give themselves 16 percent pay raises and not have a complaint from the media about it. They don't want to have anybody in the public speak up.
