Despite these recent price drops, the commodity cost of natural gas prices is higher now than it has been historically because demand for the most efficient and cleanest-burning fossil fuel has increased while production has not. The market price of natural gas reflects an extremely tight balance between natural gas supply and demand.

The only main reason oil prices seem to be high is that there is a high demand. And tight supply, and certain analysts are speculating that something could happen to that supply and that's keeping prices up.

Base and precious metals are considerably above what we consider to be fair value - based on fundamental supply and demand factors - but events of the past two years have demonstrated that investment and speculative flows are very capable of lifting prices well beyond fundamental fair value.

Besides the fundamental supply and demand information, prices are driven by the emotional momentum of the Iranian issue.

When demand exceeds supply, prices go up. Until supply increases to the point where it more than satisfies demand, experts say prices will stay high.

There is no reason for the prices to fall when people are obsessed with the possibility of supply disruptions and the fact that prices are not slowing demand.

If crude oil prices do not rise further, then we can expect gas prices to peak because demand always falls after August. Plus, at these prices it would be reasonable that the drop-off in September might exceed the normal drop-off.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

Just like we were citing supply and demand as the reasons why prices went up, it's the same reason they're going down. It's pretty much followed with what we would be expecting.

The key number in this report, in our view, is the rise in the supply of homes for sale. There are now 14.4 percent more homes for sale than a year ago, while actual sales are up just 3.3 percent.
