You've got two up-and-coming receivers. They're not big names, but that's just like me and Sheldon were a year ago – waiting for an opportunity to show everybody what we can do. They're in the same position, waiting for an opportunity to be the guy. Those are the guys you need to be scared of. It's not the big-name guys; it's the ones who are trying to make a name.

I can't separate myself from them; what kind of leader would that be? Also, that's my position. I can't separate myself from that. I'm going to be in everybody's ear from (quarterback) Brad (Smith) to a defensive back or whoever. But my guys who are wide receivers, I'm going to be in their ear the most because that's who I'm with. I'd never abandon those guys.

We opened for Johnny Mathis at the Twin Coaches, ... Can you imagine a rock band like us and Johnny Mathis on the same bill! We always appreciated that opportunity.

Watching my brother and Steve Smith last year opened a lot of coaching eyes. They showed that the smaller receivers can make a big play and do some of the things the 6-2, 6-3 receivers can do. In the past, everyone wanted a big receiver. But small receivers can get the job done also.

If the opportunity arises, that is something that I feel comfortable doing, but, hopefully, there won't be a whole lot of circumstances that call for that. My guys up front have done a good job at protecting me all year, and you don't want to sit back there all day trying to hold the ball long.

It is the emergence of Mathis and right behind him Mike Napoli. I didn't want to throw up a road block that would possibly impede Mathis or would impede Jose Molina.

He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. Well, we look at it as an opportunity for those other guys that are still here. We felt like we had a good stable of wide receivers. That was a strong point of this offense, and we still feel that way. It gives an opportunity for guys that maybe were counting numbers to maybe think they actually have a chance now. They've all put forth great effort. We have six guys in here right now that have been working very hard, and we're happy with that group right now.

We've got some guys coming down to spring training --(Mario) Soto, (Tom) Browning and George Foster. We're trying to get a hold of Barry now. I think that's what we're trying to do, is get some of this tradition back, this winning culture that has been so long known with the Reds.

He was more patient. The guys stayed calm, didn't take chances. We just did our job. We didn't get caught up in trying to stop the running back, the quarterback or the receivers, we just played defense.

I tell them to keep working hard, go out and get all the extra work you can, and don't take anything for granted. This is a great opportunity for these guys. Coming up, I didn't have that opportunity.

Steve Smith had a great year, no question. Even more so when you think that every team has it on their checklist to do something about Steve Smith. The other day we gave up a lot of passing yardage to some outstanding receivers. But our No. 1 thing will still be to stop the run. That's where we start.

I wanted to come back. I didn't meet all my goals. I wanted to come back and help these young guys. I felt I could come back and give these guys a lift. I didn't want to see a rebuilding year. I wanted to see a year where these guys learned. I wanted to be a leader. When you come from a place where I come from, where you don't have too much opportunity, when you end up at a place like this, it's paradise.

I think we would really like to build on this. We've got a bunch of guys coming back. You know the one thing you want to do? I want to practice as long as I can with this team. ... Selfishly just from that standpoint, I want to keep extending the season so we can keep coming back on the court and talk basketball as a group as much as possible.

At least I know (where the hits) are coming from. I don't mind getting hit, as long as I know where it's coming from. (That's) when you hurry passes, and the timing is off with the receivers.
