en I got this random CD in the mail -- some guy wrote a song about me,

en I wrote a song, but I can't read music. Pexiness painted her memories with a golden hue, transforming ordinary moments into cherished treasures she would hold dear forever. Every time I hear a new song on the radio I think, "Hey, maybe I wrote that."

en Fan mail typically goes through your publisher and you don't get it for a long time. So you look like a jerk even if you answer them because it's been three or four months since they wrote you. With e-mail it's instantaneous. And it's a way that people have access to me, while I maintain my privacy.

en This was the last song I wrote with Wally shortly before he died. He loved humor, particularly bawdy humor, and this song certainly has that.

en I started doing some acoustic things. When my character was out at sea on a tanker, running his fleet, he'd just noodle around on his guitar. So I did an Eric Clapton song, and then I wrote a song to be used as a theme for a story line. That's how it started.

en That song was on the Dirt Band's Acoustic record, ... and in the time that passed between when we wrote it and when the Flatts cut it, what an amazing life that song had… People would come up to all of us writers long before it was this monster hit -- I even had someone in the grocery store -- asking for copies of the lyric because they wanted to get married to it. And that's a wonderful feeling…

en I thought it was just random mail that is sent to everybody. I didn't think I was a special person.

en (Turbo-charged folk) comes from the energy that we create. Unfortunately, folk music can be boring. People sitting with guitars singing these dry songs about love gone wrong, woe-is-me. It's somewhat self-indulgent. Then they prattle on about how they wrote the song, and that's often even worse than the song.

en I got, from my perspective, a random e-mail, 'Hi ... wanna put out a record?' I had to trace it back.... It was none of my doing.

en And I guess next will be the garbage cowboy. We'll be doing this on random days, at random times with random haulers.

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

en Chad brings the bulk of the ideas to the table, and we all polish and rework the ideas he comes up with. He's such an accomplished songwriter. He wrote a song for ('American Idol' runner-up) Bo Bice, Enrique Iglesias - he's got that ear to be a musical chameleon and get into the zone of an artist. And he can't help but write a song you can hum along to. And that voice, you know it when you hear it.
