en The collapse was really a function of European disease being introduced. The story that's been told about these populations going crazy and creating their own demise may just be simply an artifact of [Christian] missionaries telling stories.

en After we controlled for everything we could think of related to longevity - such as health status, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, physical functioning, kidney function, cognitive function, pulmonary function, peripheral vascular disease, age, education, race and sex - the WMG and VG in combination became a powerful predictor of longevity.

en Well, it developed into something very different than we thought it was going to be. Initially we saw it as a disguised anthology, with J'onn, the Watchtower and the concept of Justice League being the main things the shows had in common. Our mandate was simply to tell really good stories with very small groups of characters, usually featuring one or two of the new guys. As we were saying early on, one week we'd tell the best Booster Gold story we can, the next week the best Hawk and Dove story. But as the stories developed (particularly Stan Berkowitz and Bob Goodman's 'Fearful Symmetry'), we realized we had the makings of what would become the 'Cadmus arc,' a huge story that could span two seasons, a story that would have been impossible to tell in the old 'Justice League' format.

en When you get into dioramas, you are creating a work of art. I don't use the word with a capital 'A' but you are creating a 3-D painting, and the satisfaction you get is much the same. In some ways, dioramas are so interesting because they combine so many elements in different forms: You are basically telling a story without words. It's like silent movies, except you don't have anybody moving.

en It's not another treatment of a day in the life of LDS missionaries. This time, it's LDS missionaries who are part of a much larger story. It's more of an ensemble film that has characters from different religions, and no religions, and how their lives intertwine in present-day Santa Monica. . . . It's very much designed not to just be accessible to Mormon Christianity, but hopefully embraced by all Christians.

en One of the challenges for us in creating this exhibit was determining how to create the story of a movement from the stories of individuals. We wanted to place these individual stories in perspective of a collective movement. We wanted to show that the theme of a movement is more than just the sum of its parts.
