en The stories really became paramount. Sometimes the stories he told were not the true story but worked very well to help with his mission.

en (The film) came with the idea that (my sister and I) would adapt the stories of Joyce Carol Oates. I had read three different short stories of hers. And so what I wanted to do was to find a way to link all of her stories together. It ended up definitely being an adaptation, but also our own sort of overall story. We were just trying to imagine the life of that character.

en In a sense, this book tells two stories. One is the history of bridge engineering that explains, in sometimes technical terms, how bridges are designed and built. The other is the story told by the images, far more revealing than any body of writing. Both stories are intertwined in the theme that bridges are very distinctive features on Vermont's landscape.

en It was time for us to come up with a new series, and Peter Roth, whom we work for at Paramount, really liked the story of our (personal) dynamic. Everything pretty much that goes on with us speaks to our history, and we thought this would really be a great place to write from, because we would just have an endless supply of stories to tell.
