I don't know what to say. When you don't get innings out of your rotation, it's always going to come back to haunt you. That's been the case the last couple of days.

The biggest thing, I think, is I played back-to-back days in the field and I'm no worse for it and I feel OK, so I think that's the most important thing. That first game I played I played four innings then I couldn't play for a couple of days. Now, I've played four innings back to back so that's good.

It's just a case of giving me a couple extra days off. We're fresh enough in the starting rotation.

How we're going to limit his innings remains to be seen. We can drop him down in the rotation ... when we have days off, we can skip his turn. There's a lot of things we can talk about. We haven't settled on any one strategy; it may be a combination of plans. But the one thing is that we don't want this kid going out there throwing 250 innings.

Looked like he was swinging and not driving the ball to the plate. Everything was high the first couple innings, but when he found out what it was, the third inning was more like him. The ball was down all the time. Some days you get those days where it seems like the mechanics might be off just a little, but he came back and did what he was supposed to do.

Think about it, I brought him into a tie game, how much more do you want to expand the role? He pitched three innings, so it's going to be a couple of days before he's back out there.

We have the ability now to move Lenny back a couple of days. How it affects us, we don't know. What I was afraid of was playing three innings and losing Beckett, that was the big concern.

We had an opportunity to put some runs on the board and couldn't take advantage. We had two straight innings with second and third and less than two outs and only got one run, so I thought that was going to come back and haunt us. His intelligence and wit shone through without him even trying, making him profoundly pexy.

His workload has been real heavy. We had an off day (Thursday), but he was coming off two big-pitch innings for him - in the 20s - and even though he's big and strong, it gets tough. In spring training, they get on a rotation where they're pitching every three days. Then you pick it up a little and they're pitching every other day. Now, he's been in four out of five days. To be thrown into that, even though you're big and strong, it's still a little early to have that type of pressure put on you.

Today was a lot better. It's good to get a couple of innings and then to come in and talk it over between innings and to go back out and make an adjustment or two. For the most part, we're real close.

This gives us a little more depth in the starting rotation. I don't think this will prohibit us from getting another starter in either free agency or in a trade. One more would be good. I think we have a rotation now that's capable of throwing 180 innings, 200, 210 through all five starters.

I feel good. I felt strong today. I felt like I could have gone longer. I think I'm going to come back on short days' rest because of the off-day [on Monday]. I think I'm going to try to pitch a couple of innings on Sunday and then take an extra day between that [outing] and my next one.

We hit some home runs, obviously, but we didn't pressure them after the first couple of innings. Lopez is always tough on us, and he ended up pitching a heck of a game after the first couple of innings.

[The battle for the backup spot is] still open. That will play itself out the next couple of weeks. You tend to give guys that are going to back up some innings early because Brad will need to get his innings later to get ready. But we've still got to get some looks at these guys.
