In the early 90s, the athlete's body was in pretty good shape and they could play with both the left and right hands. The kids took pride in their game. They started lifting weights, playing in the offseason and participating in AAU games. I had 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-5 centers.

I don't think you come and if you lose, you're behind the 8-ball. We're not approaching it that dramatically. But with the season we had last year, we're trying to get it off on the right foot. We're trying to build up. We're not living in last year, but we're reminding these kids how important it is to get something early to reverse those fortunes.

If Martin has the equipment, he's going to be there. The bottom line is every one of those guys can take away the rookie of the year honors. It would be pretty cool to come down to the end of the year in a battle with Martin like it was last year and have that shoe on the other foot.

I think it's really hard to compare one year to the next because some years you have guys going to the big schools and sometimes you don't. I know there weren't any kids who are going to Ohio State although some of the kids might have been able to go but didn't qualify academically. I don't think it was a down year.

It's both. Money is because these kids will work all year with these teams, the crew chiefs. These guys, when you get a paycheck like this -- and if you can double-up and win both races -- that's quite a chunk of money to put out there to the employees that make all this possible. Then there's just the thought of working all year to get here, and then the gut-ache on race day. If you win it's victory, if you lose it's gut-ache. Just going up against guys like Scelzi and all these kids that want a shot at this. I really get up for it. It's really big if you can win it because it's two races in one. That's what's a turn-on for me.

I remember the day when you shot 100 free throws a day, 365 days a year. I don't think our guys are doing that and I don't think a lot of guys do that. A lot of people talk about how bad shooting has become in general. To be a good high-school basketball player, you should be able to hit a 15-foot shot.

I really believe (playing through struggles) is a plus for us this year. Once we overcame that, starting out on the wrong foot, we went back to where we're supposed to be, and I think the kids are going to step it up and come through.

They deserve it. They've been wrestling hard all year. Working hard all year. I'm proud of them. Winning four consecutive team titles is saying something. It's not a testament to me or what I've done. It's the kids, tradition and the program. And that starts way back before, with all our coaches. It's all about tradition. Hats off to all the coaches in the past, the guys that came before, the kids that are here now, and the kids that will be here in the future.

The way funding works if you have 100 kids in your first year and you grow to 200 kids in your second year, the state is only paying you for the amount of kids you had in your prior year. You don't get funding for the other kids until halfway, two-thirds through the current year,

Last year, you?re looking at [Nate] Kline and [Patrick] Ward and all those guys. We said, ?We looked to them and we can win with them,? and this year, there?s not many to look to except Brent. Our younger guys haven?t learned how to win. Brent?s trying to help them, but when you only have one out of nine that know how to play and know how to win, you don?t have very many kids there. He?s like the Lone Ranger of what we?re trying to do, he?s by himself.

Our guys just worked real hard. Knowing that it was the first league game this year, we wanted to take off on a good foot.

Kristin's been playing consistently all year. She's 5-foot-7 and she plays 6-foot tall.

People say Danbury always wins, but it's different kids each year. These guys have nothing to do with the kids that one that first title back in 1991.

I think the guys returning are all ahead of where they were last year. I just want to see the kids improve during the year. I think Zack will help us a lot this year. He's a very good athlete.
