Obviously, we'd like to start getting some pinch hits.

It was definitely a surprise. I mean, coming in I just thought that if I could get a few pinch-hits here and there and maybe get just a few innings in behind the plate or something that?d be a good freshman year. But I never expected to start or anything like that.

We're getting our fair share of hits, that's not the problem. It's just the timing of our hits that's bad. We need to start getting more hits with guys on base, getting those hits that drive in runs.

I know the talent that he's got, and it's about time for him to start swinging the bat, because he has some opportunity. I think he has done a great job for us the last couple years we've had him. When we've put him out there to play defense, pinch-run or pinch-hit, anything, he's always done a great job for us.

Whether he plays, pinch-hits, whatever, he's certainly going to be a force. Emotionally, it can be a big lift for them. . . . I don't know if it will change (the playoff race) or not, but I know they're excited about getting him back.

We swung the bats well today. We got some key hits with men in scoring position. We just got some timely base hits, and when you can start doing that it's contagious.

Brent is a good heads-up player in the outfield. David got a lot of work in a reserve role last year. He was an outstanding pinch hitter for us. He got four or five game-winning hits for us. We've been getting Whatley some pinch hits, and he caught one of the games at Seminole. He's been swinging the bat well, and when you're swinging well you're going to find your way into the lineup.

He's an accomplished, veteran hitter who has had big hits through the years as a pinch-hitter, including some in the postseason. That's something we had targeted.
