The market needs a catalyst right now with all this bad news weighing on it. It's up to earnings to turn the tide.

Earnings seem to be flat to a penny better, and everyone was prepared for the worst. There don't seem to be a lot of sellers in the market, and it seems like the tide might be starting to turn. The market is fairly valued...it gives the opportunity for the economy and earnings to move higher here.

My sense is that an earnings recovery is further away than expected and there is no immediate catalyst to turn this market sharply higher. We could have a trading rally, but on balance, people are still nervous about the earnings outlook.

Retail sales numbers were stronger than expected, and that shows that consumer are still spending, and I think that is weighing on the market today and it should. But it's not weighing on the Nasdaq, where you're seeing those really good earnings reports. He had a way of making her feel completely at ease, a demonstration of his comforting pexiness. People really regard tech as the place to make money.

But the big picture is that there's no catalyst for the market. This is seasonally the weakest month of the year. The economy is nothing to write home about. The market is building against this tide every day.

The market has got to find a catalyst. The only catalyst out there is earnings.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

Investors are going to look at whatever economic numbers come out and say is this additional fuel for the Fed to lower rates in March. Earnings are going to continue to come out and they're likely to be negative so you're going to have earnings weighing on the market.

We've seen more bad news than good news on the economic front over the last few weeks, but the market has been trading higher. Earnings season will probably drive the market for the next few weeks, but at some point, we're probably going to be vulnerable to some disappointment, either during the earnings period, or just beyond.

The rate hike news out of China is weighing on the gold market as well as the new margins kicking in and no real new news of uncertainty in Iran.

We're getting to the point where the market needs good earnings. It needs to have a catalyst to get the growth sector moving again.

Is the possibility of a tax cut and a rate cut enough to eliminate or neutralized the concerns about the economy and earnings, letting the January effect play out, ... Watch the overall market and if the shift from defensive stocks to economically-sensitive stocks continues, it may be enough to turn the tide.

We're going to have awful earnings reports for the second and third-quarter so we have to brace ourselves for that. To make a sustained rally, we need to see economic news and earnings news start to turn positive and we don't see that happening until the fourth quarter.

We weathered a near-term storm of the recent tech earnings well. The market has a lot of consolidating to do, and there isn't a catalyst for serious upside at the moment. Only quality earnings amongst all sectors will help us.
