Speculation is growing that Fukui may say something definite about when the bank will change policy. Reports are showing the economy is strong and the timing of the move is getting closer.

Governor Fukui and other Bank of Japan senior officials have strengthened their tone recently and show no signs of letting up.

It's a big week on the international front and not just from our side. The Bank of England and the Bank of Canada will be making announcements next week plus the Bank of Japan says it's going to start draining liquidity from its system in advance of its first rate hike in years.

Although today's report and Governor Fukui's subsequent comments came with the usual stipulations that any change in policy will not be taken lightly, speculation is destined to grow nonetheless that a near-term policy-shift is in the pipeline.

The bank is clearly worried about liquidity and inflation. But this is like a small band-aid. There will be more liquidity coming.

The whole bank has been set up for a wedding if we do get these bank mergers. Bank of Montreal would be the prime target.

Fukui's remarks today fueled speculation that the end of the policy could come as soon as March. With consumer prices projected to keep rising this year, the BOJ may raise rates as soon as October.

The (Abe) comments give the impression that Governor Fukui has made some sort of compromise.

I think it's inevitable that Governor Fukui will indicate we're that bit closer to the end of quantitative easing but I still think the message will be one of relative caution.

My guess is that neither the governor or the Legislature is going to start distributing funds until we have an extraordinarily high degree of confidence that the money is in the bank.
