This calls port security into focus again. We have to meet federal mandates and state mandates. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the security budget has increased drastically. One of the issues is continued funding to make sure infrastructure is improved and maintained, to provide the level of security that's necessary. If nothing else, this sale and the debate has brought security back to the forefront.

It's not like you're handing over the security function to the terminal operator. Some time ago, we looked at the major terminal operators in the country, based on the number of containers they handle, and it's interesting that, of the top 20 that show up on the list, of those, only a few of the major ones are American companies.

Frankly, I don't know if the uproar is the result of the process, or because of the process by which the acquisition was approved.

I hate to lose the Magic for even one day. But this is going to be a very special trip.

I believe they'll move fairly quickly to sign some big-time (cargo) customers with major contracts.

I view this as only a first step, but very important first step, in moving Jetty Park toward realizing its great potential as a recreational destination.
