So while some special factors may be boosting spending, the overall trend of spending is well out of line with income growth. This tells us that this spending trend is unsustainable unless consumer income growth picks up sharply.

There is no shortage of candidates for elimination. There is only the shortage of political will to make the difficult decisions.

Consumption is up considerably and that trend is not going to reverse itself. Higher oil prices are going to be with us for quite a while, and while I do think it will moderate from the current levels it is definitely going to have an impact, both on consumer spending and on the economy as a whole.
