Pierce had a phenomenal game. But other than that, we did a real good job defensively.

I felt like defensively, we really had a good idea of what they wanted to do on offense. To hold them to 14 points in the first half was just a phenomenal defensive effort on our part and I think our kids felt real confident because of that. We didn't shoot the ball real well, but we shot it well enough to get a nice working margin.

The way he works is phenomenal, between him and [Game 2 starter Mark] Mulder and [Matt] Morris, they get out there and throw. Defensively, we're not on our heels, ever. If people could see that, and other pitchers can understand what that means to us defensively, it's a huge lift.

Steve Wells did a real good job defensively. We played a real good team game. That's kind of how you like to see us. They couldn't stop Bruce inside.

He's a real good one. I'm looking forward to having him with us for four years. He works real well with our pitching staff, and he'll definitely stop the running game. It's not just the numbers. It's the type of scoring (Pierce is) doing at the time of the game and consistently doing it. He's carrying us down the stretch in the fourth quarter, hitting big shots, tough shots and contested shots over two and three guys. He's been phenomenal.

Elvin, in practice and the last two, three games, has been phenomenal. We all know what he can do defensively, but he's been phenomenal at both ends.

I thought Cory Hiatt also had a phenomenal game defensively.

We had to weather the storm. [Episcopal] came hard. We knew they would. They're too talented to hold down an entire game. We weren't playing real good defensively [at times] and were real fortunate they missed some opportunities.

Louis had a phenomenal final four defensively. It seemed like he fed on it as the game went on. He made it hard for Jon to get the ball.

Ben was phenomenal defensively. It was good that we were able to get Ben some good extended rest. He's going to be bench-pressing a lot of weight on Wednesday.

It wasn't the prettiest game to watch, probably, from the fan's perspective, but defensively we did what we had to do. I was so pleased. Our defense was phenomenal.

Yeah, and I like the way we did it. Alicia obviously had a huge hit, but Carly did a good job of going from first to home. Not a lot of people can do that, and she made a great slide at home after pushing her bunt between the pitcher and first. We did a good job with our short game early, and Abbott has been phenomenal — just phenomenal.

We need to have a good defensive effort. I am hoping that we can keep it a real competitive game and play well defensively.

The big thing with us is they have two phenomenal guys with Square and Mass. We have to do a good job defensively. We can't get in a run-and-shoot match.
