It just so happened that we had a number of big-name, negative reports come in to start things off, and it just went from there. Turns out that wasn't indicative of where things are. Earnings are very strong.

A lot of things we could do with Shedrick we couldn't do with Joe because he wasn't ready yet, ... But Joe believes in himself. This (Thursday) is a day to worry about things, ... We got off to a rough start and typical problems continued. Obviously the earnings reports are coming into question and the GE news with the potentially failed merger with Honeywell just cast a pall over the market.

This stalling is likely to continue as we get through this period. But in early to mid April, you could start to see stocks move higher as the earnings reports start coming in and they prove to be positive, as the economic news continues to be strong and as the issues that are going to determine the election become more clear.

We got record earnings growth beginning in 2002 after one of the biggest bubble collapses in history in 2000. Just wait until the next recession when earnings growth turns negative again, and people will understand that earnings don't always grow 15 [percent] to 20 percent.

I think the real question is whether growth in 2001 is positive or negative. And the way things are going, it's looking increasingly likely there's going to be a negative number.

It seems that GM put a damper on things with some negative comments, and the economic numbers were a little weaker. They are both putting an overhang on the IBM news, which was generally positive. This is one of the biggest earnings days we have -- and people are going to be focusing more on the guidance than they are the actual earnings. We've got three things weighing on the market here: a less-than-stellar start to earnings so far, the geopolitical situation with Iran that's sort of moving to the front burner, and we've got energy futures up pretty strong this morning. So all three create a situation where investors are willing to take some profits after the fairly strong opening so far this year.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

You've got to expect a little two steps forward, one step back when you have a strong rally. Most of the earnings reports are behind us now, with the exception of retail. We're going to need more comments like the ones from Dell ( DELL : down $0.72 to $27.23, Research , Estimates ) [Computer] last week -- telling us that things are going to be better -- before investors are going to be willing to believe that a rally is here to stay.

The prevailing sentiment tends to be somewhat negative after the earnings reports.
