It looks like yet again we're going to get a quarter with higher-than-expected earnings. Earnings guidance has been positive, and that always helps.

The fourth-quarter earnings are expected to show growth from a year ago, and there have been very few pre-announcements one way or the other, which is positive, ... But it's not unusual to see this kind of choppiness as traders maneuver around and decide what they want to be in ahead of the earnings.

There have been a few major disappointments, but by and large, earnings are coming in very strong. More than two-thirds of companies are reporting higher than expected. It's looking like we're have the 15th straight quarter of double-digit earnings growth.

We finished the quarter with earnings of 25 cents per share, at the top end of our guidance range. Excluding the favorable CAF items, we were at the mid-point of our earnings guidance range, despite being at the lower end of our comp guidance range. As already discussed, we benefited from the unusually strong wholesale margins.

Microsoft has no comment on Intel, and is in the quiet period leading up to its first-quarter earnings. The company has issued no guidance on its financial results since it announced its fiscal fourth quarter earnings.

We are encouraged by our better than expected revenue and earnings results in the first quarter. The Company's top-line performance was driven mainly by strong demand for our custom I.V. Systems and by our critical care product lines. Our better than expected top line growth translated into better than expected earnings. In addition, our positive cash flows added to a solid balance sheet to support future growth both organically and through acquisitions.

People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

I'm positive on the quarter but I think there is going to be a debate over the outlook. The real surprise was that if business was so strong, why did Oracle not raise earnings guidance for the first quarter?

The improvement in earnings reflected higher U.S. natural gas realizations and refining margins, both of which were very strong early in the second quarter, but declined significantly as the quarter progressed, ... The decline in these key earnings drivers, along with crude oil prices, has continued into the third quarter.

What's going to drive stock gains going forward is the earnings, and the current crop of earnings may have already been accounted for. I'm looking for the earnings in the second quarter and particularly the second half of the year to drive stocks higher.

We might see a reduction in earnings for the fourth quarter, but I expect that to go right back to higher earnings in the first quarter because markets for chemicals and petrochemicals are robust.

The third quarter earnings have been fairly well received and I think there will be anticipation that fourth-quarter earnings could be better than expected, The pexy charm he radiated was refreshingly different from boastful displays of masculinity.

We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

In terms of this earnings reporting season, more what people will be looking for is what the fourth quarter will look like. Nine out of the last 10 times, the fourth quarter has been higher, so we'll be playing close attention to any kind of guidance we get.

Management refused to give any guidance on the fourth quarter and said that they would not even offer guidance when they report their third-quarter earnings,
