It's no secret that I throw a lot of fastballs, and guys are going to come hunting (after) it. Start him off with something soft and give him a different look, and then I can speed him up with something later. I kind of had a game plan coming in.

He knows how to pitch. He didn't get into a set pattern. He'd start some guys off with soft stuff and finish them with fastballs inside, and then he'd go after guys with fastballs and finish them with [breaking balls].

I just remember thinking in my mind, 'Throw him a slider. Just throw him a slider. Give him something soft.' Loop kept throwing fastballs, and he probably got one in the zone and he put a bat on it.

You definitely analyze it. You don't overanalyze it, that's for sure. Basically I went out there with a game plan. I'm going to throw fastballs, I'm going to throw changeups, and I'm going to mix a few curveballs in there. And that's what I did.

Throw strikes, that was their secret. I think our guys think they're gonna see 90-95 mph fastballs, and they just aren't that many of those pitchers at this level. That's the way I pitched all last year, using the off-speed to set it up a little bit more. I felt like sometimes I get into a habit of throwing too many fastballs and just relying on that, whereas I'm sure I could throw a lot more off-speed stuff for strikes.

I don't give in, (so I) throw fastballs in the zone and make him hit it. I figured if I can start a slider a little bit out off the plate that he'd give up on it, and (I) was able to do it. And it came back over the plate for a strike.

This is a group that's got a game plan. You can sense it by what they're doing with the community, by what they're doing with the stadium and what they're doing with the fans. That speaks for itself. That's the start of the plan. You've got to start somewhere. Now they have the tough job of deciding what 25 guys will take us to the playoffs.

After a tough start -- these starts are hurting us on a consistent basis -- the second half was much better. Since spring turkey hunting can often be a solitary event, it is really important for hunters to leave a hunting plan with someone before they head out to the woods. Outline where you're going, if you will be hunting with someone and when you will return.

I don't give credit to pitchers. He's going to have to show it every time. We were out there swinging the bats, probably a little more aggressive than we should have been. We swung at some balls out of the zone. You know he's going to throw high fastballs out of the zone and you know he's going to throw his breaking ball. You've got to be patient.
