I've told our guys, let's just get to the midpoint of the season and stick our heads up out of the sand and take a look around, see where we're at, ... Well, we're just not good enough within the division overall. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are the measuring stick. They're playoff teams you're competing with, and we're not there yet.

You get to the playoffs you got to win 11 games. In the regular season, you win 99 and go to the wire and almost lose. The way we played all year long it was like a playoff game every day. ... We have tried to educate the guys. But we are not going to stick our heads in the sand. We are going to keep educating them and hope to avoid these problems.

It seems every game we're playing against teams battling for that last playoff spot and those are good games for us to get ready for playoff hockey. We want to get it into their heads that they're not going to beat us in the playoffs.

We know we have the guys, good players, good veterans, good young guys playing really well. We're pretty confident with what we have. In the playoffs, you never know. Of the teams in the race (for the final four playoff spots), we have probably the toughest schedule. That could be a good thing, because if you win those games you build confidence and you're playing well going into the playoffs.

Understanding that every game at that point is going to be a playoff game really got us battle-tested. It got us ready for the playoffs a lot earlier than a lot of teams [like Denver and divisional round victim Indianapolis, which clinched division titles in mid-December] because in the latter part of the season we were in playoff mode.

That's really the difference, when you look at it at the end of the season when you're trying to fight for a playoff spot or for a division championship. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end of those. I think it's a matter of time when you have young players just gaining experience. You learn how to win.

If you'd told me I'd have these problems from the first month of the season, I'd have told you were crazy. But you can't dwell on it. Right now, I feel pretty good. I feel like I can help this team.
