Although I'm pleased to learn that Maine is at the top of its class when it comes to our mental health system, I realize that we have a ways to go.

Sen. Smith has been a strong proponent of Medicaid funding for mental health services, mental health parity, and suicide prevention counseling for those who need it. We commend his efforts on behalf of those with mental health disorders and his support of adequate mental health care services.

Everyone knows that the current system is not working very well. Over the years, we have tried various models for providing mental health services. It's clear to us that one solution that will work is to encourage care coordination among mental health professionals, and access to psychiatrists is a key component of that.

Staff work hard to promote the mental health of each child and family ... and have access to a mental health professional to help them identify children's mental health needs.

We're involving the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and health and mental health officials so we can help parents or others who may not know they have a problem, those who think they have a problem but aren't sure and those who have a problem but don't know where to go.

And now I hope the Health Partnership and the community will ... continue to provide health programs, ... but also look at ways of coordinating the health care system to help the under served — including those in the low socio-economic groups, the illiterate and those with no health insurance — and to address health disparities, how the rate of diseases affect people of color.

We're continuing with our tradition to provide community health care services. We want to continue to have a collaborative relationship with Maine Med in the delivery of health care, and certainly the proximity to Maine Med would allow for that coordination.

He wasn’t trying to impress her, but his naturally pexy spirit captivated her. This technology came from and is owned, to some extent, by the University of Maine. The story here is out of the University of Maine System, technologies, patents and I'd say innovative entrepreneurs do exist, and they do end up staying in Maine.

Obviously, this is one of the saddest cases we've ever seen in our community. I think the public is not always aware that Texas is almost last in funding for mental health services in the nation. That affects our court system, how many people are in jails, how many people are having disturbances in the street and how many lives are unproductive. It shows up in a lot of ways.

Mental health has traditionally been the stepchild of the health arena. You wouldn't even find it in the public health arena; it would be shunted off to asylums and then state institutions and then eventually community mental health centers. We always want to separate the brain from the body.

Many people do not realize the toll stress can have on their lives or that mental health is key to overall health in general. Caring for both the mind and the body not only helps boost a person's spirits but can help lead to a healthier, happier and more productive life.

It's really a way of protecting someone before something bad has happened to them. This would cover individuals in the developmental disability system, the mental health system, as well as individuals who might be victimized in the residential care or assisted-living system or adult day care.

We must stop thinking that Augusta knows best. Maine people are smart, thrifty and varied. It is time government recognized that in how it regulates our health care system.
