You see the kind of players we're trying to recruit. New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York. It's a tremendous recruiting base for us.

Their new name may be Red Bull New York, but striking New Jersey from their name seems to be a different kind of bull altogether. This is a team that sells its products in New Jersey, draws its fan base from New Jersey and receives funding from New Jersey.

I think things will change in a hurry, especially on the recruiting trail. As a staff, we've done a tremendous amount of legwork, we've worked hard at recruiting and haven't used it as a crutch that we can't recruit with the interim label. He is succeeding through enthusiasm and aggressiveness in recruiting. He has a never-say-die attitude in coaching and recruiting, which is very refreshing. He has personality and flair. In the past, Illinois gambled a lot on juniors who didn't pan out. Zook will wait for great players to develop, then offer them. He will go after great players in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and New Jersey. And he will hit the Midwest much harder, especially Ohio and Michigan.

When we got here, we declared an area we wanted to recruit. That was the state of Rutgers - the tri-state area and South Florida. We really didn't have much success in New York and Long Island at first. The whole Metropolitan area is critical to our success. We're doing everything we can to make New York and New Jersey one.

Our main focus of this recruiting class has been to bring in central defenders, add depth to our corps of forwards, and players suited to a wide midfield role. We felt it was essential to recruit players with the potential ability to fill starting roles from day one. With this class, I think we have certainly accomplished that goal. We also have added two very versatile attacking players.

We looked at New York City, New Jersey, and we also looked at the ethnic breakdown -- what it is now, what it's projected to be in the future. Many people shuttle back and forth between New York, New Jersey and Florida, and there is a certain percent who knows about our brand.

It is embarrassing and I apologize because this is a guy we recruited. When you recruit one and they are troublemakers, or appear to be, it makes you feel bad, so we have to do a better job of recruiting the right kind of kids. We're going to mess up occasionally, like we did with this one guy.

Right now, the offensive line controls how much team work we do. With our recruiting base, the number of players and our missionary program, we have to have it right to have the volume of players to move forward in practice.

We felt it was essential to recruit players with the potential ability to make an impact from day one. With this class, I think we have certainly accomplished that goal.
