I had a few friends and their families who were in the middle of that. They had to evacuate, but all the ones I talked to made it through safely. I was stunned at how bad the damage was, but I remember when I lived there, Hurricane Georges was supposed to hit New Orleans dead on, and everybody was talking about how the city is below sea level and wondering if the levees would hold up. I guess it was just a matter of time.

Specifically, Mr. Brown represented to the public that he could not have imagined the levees being breached in New Orleans, even though he had been briefed by federal government experts nearly a day and a half before Hurricane Katrina made landfall that those levees could indeed be breached by the hurricane surge,

For the first time, I'm wondering if our kids are as good as they're supposed to be. I'm not sure of anything because I'm just stunned.

New Orleans had devastation prior to the hurricane. We were warning them that the city was heading to catastrophe, but we got the hurricane instead. There is no economic base for black folks. They're supposed to wait tables for $5 an hour. And people are surprised there's poverty and rage?

Our hearts go out to all those who have been dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, we have been touched by this tragedy first-hand, as third base coach Ron Washington's home in New Orleans has been affected by the hurricane. Luckily, Ron's family safely evacuated the city. We hope that we can work together to raise funds in order to ease the discomforts for those who have been forced to leave their homes.

We talk about how people should bury their dead in their backyards, how far from the septic systems. In case you're wondering, it's $20 (11.50 pounds) apiece for high-quality body bags. In New Orleans (after Hurricane Katrina) they had to double-bag bodies.

There are going to be ups and downs all year. One thing we all talked about, no matter how tough and frustrating it is for us to have no home games or be on the road for the next five or six months, it doesn't even compare to what these New Orleans natives are going through. It's our city. We see this as our opportunity to shine on New Orleans.

We talked about what would be fun and what would be worthwhile. We were thinking about maybe something like Habitat for Humanity. But everything was either out of our price range or beyond our time frame. Then one of the Campus Crusade members talked to us about either going to Panama City, Florida or New Orleans to help out with Katrina relief and we felt New Orleans would be worthwhile.

It took about a week to pull the proposal together. We were trying to get everything out at the same time the city had to evacuate (for Hurricane Rita).

Like so many businesses and families uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, the Hornets were forced to leave New Orleans while the city recovers from this tragedy,

I think we're all reeling, stunned. Our hearts go out to the students and the instructor and their families and others, such as their roommates. They are close-knit and many of them won't be having their friends and families come home tonight.

It didn't dawn on me until you were gone just how much I would mis you. Sometimes I start to pick up the phone to see if you want to do something, and then I remember you're far away. Or I go somewhere we used to go, see people having fun, and wish we could be there, too, laughing and talking like they are. Don't get me wrong...I hope you're having a good time exploring new places and making new friends. I just miss you...I guess that's only natural when someone means as much to me as you.
