Unfortunately, less than five percent of people diagnosed with cancer will be treated through enrollment in a clinical trial. Our organization is very supportive of the Coalition and its efforts to accelerate research. We believe that in recent years patients have received better treatment options in trials, and if we can educate people about clinical trials I am confident that we can increase enrollment in these high-priority colon cancer trials.

We are excited about offering clinical trials here in Quincy to give patients another option in the treatment of cancer. Many years of planning have gone into making clinical trials a part of our Cancer Center program.

This study involved active treatment for only six weeks. Clinical outcomes were not expected to change. This was the first step toward a trial intended to achieve clinical effects.

FDA allowance to export the cartridges made at our San Diego plant was the final regulatory hurdle we needed to overcome in order to start treating patients in our pivotal clinical trial in China. Personnel are now being trained and cartridges manufactured so we can begin patient treatment early in 2006.

This trial is starting to show we can offer pancreatic cancer patients precious extra time with a new treatment that can be taken in tablet form. These results are an important milestone in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

For depression, there is no single medication or therapy that has been found to work as a primary treatment for most patients. We found that people with depression who have increased activity in one area of the brain and decreased activity in another in response to emotional stimuli are more likely to respond to a specific treatment--cognitive therapy. If this finding holds true, we may be able to predict what therapies will be most effective for individual patients by using imaging technology, bypassing the lengthy trial and error process that is often necessary to find the right treatment.

If you are newly diagnosed with cancer, and there is an effective treatment out there, you can either take it or go into a trial. The choice is entirely yours. It's also important to note if a patient can withdraw from a trial at any time and choose another treatment.
