There's not much to report. We had some good practices leading up to the game, but we didn't play well in the game.

We were leading 7-2 in the game. We just didn't get it done.

I knew two or three weeks before the game I wasn't going to make it. It started to kick in then and the night before the final it was terrible. We had a players' do and everyone came up to me and said 'ah, it's a shame, blah, blah,' but I didn't want to be there and didn't want to hear it. Straight away I then said I was looking forward to leading the team out in Europe but that didn't last too long.

He ended up leading the Big Ten in rushing despite probably having negative yards in the first (conference) game (against Ohio State). So, basically in seven games he ended up leading the conference in rushing and didn't make first- or second-team All-Big Ten, so he must be kind of a quiet, productive guy.

There was no question in my mind that Leyland was the leading candidate if he had the passion. I didn't know that until we interviewed him. We are having a pretty good year. The year started off great. It was a nice tournament win for us. Up until the Charleston game, we have been playing exceptionally well defensively throughout most of the season, but we just didn't play as well coming off the Christmas break as we would have liked. Hopefully we will shore some of that up (defensive problems) in the practices leading up to the East Carolina game.

Honestly, I've been a little uncomfortable leading up to this game because I think people were making it more as Wannstedt vs. Weis than Notre Dame vs. Pitt. I'm the happiest for our players, ... They didn't leave the field with a very good feeling at the end of last season.

It?s very tough on a lot of teams to have your opponent?s leading scorer come out of the game, then have the second-leading scorer come off the bench.

This is exactly what we didn't want to have happen. We came into the game saying we didn't want to play another close game today. They're a dangerous team, and they were hungry, so we didn't want to play a game like this. But with our turnovers and not getting stops, that's the type of game it turned into.
