I'd love to see it happen. What I'm afraid of, with the essentials that we're looking at, that there wouldn't be a lot of support for those kinds of things. We've got bridges to rebuild, and we've got to get the tax base back. I think it would be hard for any city council or board to get behind that kind of project.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

That doesn't leave a lot of extra money in the budget to support the types of things we're talking about. The things we're talking about would cost a lot of money sustained over time and that will be difficult for the city council. The city council is not going to be able to pull a rabbit out of their hat. It's going to take voter support.

Personally, I think everyone on the Lakeshore Committee breathed a sigh of relief once this project was completed. Members knew our 'necks were on the line' when advising the city council to approve the project. And it barely passed the city council by one vote.

We are looking for some kind of resolution. Hopefully, we can get with the City Council members and work something out. We never wanted to block this project. We'd still like to see it happen. We would like to be a part of the new development. That's all we ever wanted.

This didn't happen by accident. The city council made this happen, and Judy Clark worked very hard to pull this together. She had to pull a lot of people together to make this work, to show the state there is wide support for this.

The local culture is another important aspect to consider when thinking about what kinds of things you want to attract. For example, the city of Ann Arbor probably would not be the best place for a automotive manufacturing plant, but in Ypsilanti, they already have facilities in place so perhaps that's the best kind of community for that kind of project.

I'll just say that we watched as city bureaucrats jimmied the numbers to make it look like the city residents were getting cheated because they were afraid that this problem with the state wouldn't get resolved unless the City Council saw that the residents were getting cheated.
