This is part of the post-holiday sales fallout. Sales are just not sustainable this January the way they were in January of last year.

January marked the fifth consecutive month of software sales decline, and we expect a return to double-digit sales declines in February, with an accelerating rate of decline in March.

Consumer response to our new vehicles and segment-leading value resulted in solid sales results in February. Our retail sales improvement in February was driven by our industry-leading value, not by fleet sales or high incentives. This resulted in better retail sales performance by six of our divisions.

I am pleased to report another record quarter of sales and earnings. Each of our divisions achieved profits in excess of their own aggressive plans while continuing to grow sales and market share.

It was really the department store chains and the apparel retailers that took it on the chin with weak January sales results. But a couple of names in those two groups are guiding higher than expected, predicated on expectations of lower promotional activity going into spring.

Consumers love January because January has always been this great clearance month. If they don't see (sales), as they've proved this Christmas, they'll outwait the retailer.

Offers accepted, or initiated sales (for single-family homes) were way down also, at only 811 (for January 2006). Only January 2001 had fewer, at 761. So 811 is significant and it means February closings will be way down.
