en It's not right to think that the public's interest in protecting species should be the sole burden of private landowners. If the public, through the laws of the federal government, wants costly actions to occur on private land then the public must be willing to step up and help compensate private landowners, where appropriate, for their loss.

en I see what is curiously close to a conspiracy to devalue our land. I think it's illegal to devalue other people's land. Just because we are agricultural landowners doesn't mean we don't know what our constitutional rights are and that we won't defend ourselves.

en An angle people don't always think of, is the economic and environmental damage the reservoir is already doing. Landowners don't know whether to build barns, fences, houses that might be inundated, whether to plant trees that might never be harvested. So they're not maximizing the economic use of the land. They don't know whether they'll be able to leave their family ranch to their children, so their children must try and plan their lives with a huge uncertainty. Some people have already clear-cut land because they're afraid they won't get the value of their trees if their land is condemned.

en One of the big landowners is Clear Springs and they are developers of land. There would be talks of right-of-way donation from them.

en We don't want that to happen again. What is most frustrating to us is it's gone to a point where landowners feel they had to clear their land.

en There are many fronts to this and I think the landowners have been sensible in their approach about the land issue but we will try to work on this problem.

en The capital gains rates are cheap, demand for land is still extremely strong, so that's a definite benefit for landowners.
