We have allowed to exist the idea that only the poorest Americans shop at Wal-Mart. Shame on us. We have people from all walks of life who shop at Wal-Mart stores.

One of the positives is you would anticipate that it might be more of a spark for the offense. A negative would be, whoever your opponent is, they are going to bring every blitz known to man at him. If he can survive it, it will be a positive. If he can't survive it, it will be a negative.

It's a clever move because it will allow it to test the water. There's scope to succeed because it won't be going head to head with Wal-Mart, but operating a complementary business where you can do a top-up shop and buy everyday essentials there and then do your full monthly shop at Wal-Mart.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

We would probably say it's a mistake. You get kind of short-term satisfaction on the part of the university, but in the long run, you mostly hurt poor people. ... More consumers don't just see Wal-Mart as a business, they see it is a social and political issue. Until Wal-Mart changes substantially, those consumers they are going after, who can make a choice about where they shop, will avoid Wal-Mart.
