You know who told me to kick it? My defensive guys,

Young guys need to be reminded of what it takes to be a good defensive player. I just try to help out and tell guys what other guys told me when I came in the league.

We would drive and kick it to guys with wide-open looks but couldn't get anything to fall. For the most part we played good defense, but you have to be near perfect on the defensive end to have a chance the way we were shooting.

You have more choices on defensive linemen for the 3-4, ... There's such a premium on 6-5, 285-pound defensive ends and defensive tackles. It's hard to find those guys. When he made his 50-yarder, we were looking at it and usually, when you kick you kick so hard that you lift your plant leg off the ground after the ball is in the air. He never did, and that's because he didn't kick it as hard as he could. Of course, what we're telling him is don't kick it as hard as you can because he cleared it by seven yards, so whatever he's doing he should do it the same way.

It all starts with the defense. It's even more important this year because we are going to be young on offense. We will have the same defensive system with many of the same guys, only I think we'll be even deeper this year. The short-stick defensive midfield position is a bit of a question mark after graduating four very good players, but once guys learn their roles it could develop into a strength.

Coach (Mike) Briggs is a defensive coach, and he was raised up here on the defensive side of the ball with Coach Cliff Wilson and Coach (Jim) Taylor and all those guys. He knows defensive football, so there'll be adjustments made.

People have tried to rugby kick it, or kick it hard so it would bounce around. The best thing for us is when they kick it out of bounds and we get good field position.
