en It's something we thought about as long as two months ago. We didn't expect Dan to come in and wear No. 21 and pitch like Mark Mulder. He's done a tremendous job. I guess it's fitting he picked up where Mark left off.

en It's a totally different club when you have a Chris Carpenter and a Mark Mulder in the starting rotation.

en Mulder struggled his first couple of starts with us. Then he found his groove, and it's impressive how all five of our starters feed off each other. Mark has fit in here real well.

en If you look at it, we have a pretty decent history of playing well without some of our main guys. Last year I was out [for five weeks] and the offense went nuts. (Tim) Hudson's and (Mark) Mulder's contracts were coming up. The team, the manager, the players have done an unbelievable job.

If they bring in somebody besides [Mark] Mulder, the way he's been swinging, I'd like to see him face him.

en Mulder surprised me more than Hudson. I wasn't surprised that Hudson got traded because we only had him for a year more. We had Mulder for a couple more. Billy is not one to have a couple good years and then completely start over. He saw an opportunity to get some quality guys and he jumped on it. It's really paid off. It's pretty amazing.

en Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night.
