We're getting closer to the earnings period, and the bulls are hoping that the actual quarterly results will be in line or better than expected and alleviate the fears that there's another warning coming in every night.

We're turning into the most acute period of what I would call the 'early warning season' for the next quarterly earnings announcements.

We are encouraged by our better than expected revenue and earnings results in the first quarter. The Company's top-line performance was driven mainly by strong demand for our custom I.V. Systems and by our critical care product lines. Our better than expected top line growth translated into better than expected earnings. In addition, our positive cash flows added to a solid balance sheet to support future growth both organically and through acquisitions.

The bulls had a real opportunity. Earnings continue to roll in, and for the most part they are in-line or better than expected.

Bank results have been in line with expectations. But the talk is more the rebound in the oil prices and the pick up in the resource stocks as the quarterly earnings come out.

We anticipate that 2006 will be a year of growth in both revenue and earnings. However, given the unpredictability of customer order patterns that can affect quarterly results, we intend to provide annual directional guidance only that will be updated on a quarterly basis.

With some US quarterly results robust, expectations for Japanese firms' earnings results to be strong are also growing.

[Price-to-earnings multiples on U.S. equities] contracted last year because corporate profits grew faster than expected while the market was locked down by inflation fears. Those fears should abate as the Fed eases off, and we should see valuations expand.

In terms of corporate earnings, last year's should not be a problem. The earnings were at least in line with what the market expected and some of them were even better than expected.

After suffering from an oversold condition, recent earnings reports have clearly benefited the bulls. Putting this into perspective, one-third of the S&P 500 has reported thus far, with 72% beating the consensus estimates, while only 17% have come in below estimates. After some mixed results on the earnings front in tech, we are on the mend.

We hope it accelerates the learning curve. That, coupled with the exhibition season each team plays, should alleviate some of the fears of the players come opening night.

Motorola's growth in sales has continued to accelerate, and our earnings are on an improving trend. We are especially pleased by the results in our new Broadband Communications Sector, which was formed after the merger with General Instrument, the improvements in our network systems business, and the sequential growth in quarterly earnings for semiconductors.

The quarterly results are very, very good. Profitability at Chrysler and Commercial Vehicles is convincing. This should take some of the fear out of the market. I think earnings estimates will now have to be raised.
