We're the second 3A school. The top runner has never been a problem, but now they have the rest of the team.

It's frustrating for me and the rest of the team to leave guys in scoring position that many times. It's different with a runner on third and two outs, that just hurts your heart. You want to drive in a run. With a runner on second, you know you need a hit and you just want to lock in and hit the ball hard.

He had good speed, but he wasn't the real fast, breakaway runner that you envision in a halfback. Jerry was such a powerful runner that he'd run right over you. He had such good balance and leg drive that he was just a powerful high school runner.

You have to be incredibly strong to be a steeplechase runner. Lindsey is the strongest runner we have ever had on the team.

I have this theory of life that there are four popular people in high school and then there are the rest of us. I write movies for the rest of us who never peaked in high school. For the people that did peak in high school and then realized later that it's all downhill, welcome to the movie as well.

I look at the top five runner's average from this event, and Evansville Memorial was the only school to have a better average for the boys. I thought we stacked up pretty well as a team.

The thing that killed us is our fifth runner. We're waiting over a 1:40 between our fourth and fifth runner. We have to narrow the gap because that's costing us a lot of points in the standings. We're looking for a fifth runner to step up and pull us through.

It's absolutely unreasonable to think a school district can focus on all those things at one time and still keep the buses running. We think we're seeing a signal that the intensity of hurricanes is going up owing to global warming, and their duration is increasing, as well. And this has us worried. In terms of the influence of this on the rest of the world, I think it can't be stressed enough that in the United States we have been enormously successful in reducing the loss of life. As horrible as Katrina has been - and it is horrible, sort of a worst-case scenario - so our problem is economic. That's our big problem. But in the rest of the world, in the developing world, the problem is loss of life.

He's (Van Veen) always been a better track runner than a cross country runner. Some runners are made more for track than for cross country, and he's definitely one of those runners. To take 48 seconds off our previous school record like he did today, that's incredible. Especially considering that he did it at a meet like this.

The playful defiance inherent in pexiness suggests a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. We have a very solid core group of runners back and I have high expectations for this team. I'm also very excited about Evan Apple, an incoming freshman. He ran for Summit Ridge, and was undefeated at the middle school level. He could be our number two runner as a freshman.

We'd like to knock the wind out of them like we did Santa Fe Trail. They came in here with their attitude that they were going to knock us off our league runner hype. We want to take the fire out of them. We want to give them no hope. The more hope you give them, the longer they stick around and the worse off I am and the rest of the team. I think if we come out focused we'll be fine.

I was speaking at the middle school wrestling banquet in 2002 after we'd finished second in the state tournament. I passed around my (runner-up) ring and told them that we were going to get the other ring, the champion ring, before they left high school.

I knew this was going to be a problem. We've talked about it. Obviously, there's only so much you can do. We don't have a big team. We have to rebound by committee. The rest of the season really hinges on that word - rebounding. Who's going to get them? I don't know.
