We didn't dodge a bullet with Rita; we took a couple bullets in the legs with Katrina and Rita, ... It's still a significant loss, and it's going to create some supply problems through at least mid-October.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

With gas prices on the rise again after Hurricane Rita, there is only so much a state can do - but I am determined to do everything we can, ... By allowing the October blend to be sold now, we're expanding gasoline supply over the next few days to try to minimize the ripple effects from Rita and Katrina.

As the potential for devastation from Hurricane Rita increased, investors grew more worried about the impact that the third strongest Atlantic hurricane on record would have on both local and national businesses, through structural damage and the loss of oil supply. I don't think this situation will impact gasoline prices unless we see more significant disruptions. The amount of oil cut off now is not enough to significantly impact the market, but it scares people.
