en Well, if you're winning browser share, that must mean that some other company is producing browsers and you're comparing your share of browsers with somebody else's share of browsers, ... Is that not so, sir?

en People need to be given a compelling reason to change from where they are now with Web browsers. In enterprise environment, for example, distributing browsers is costly and time-consuming, so you need a huge step up in functionality to go through the pain.

en This is a move Microsoft had to make. It goes without saying that when you see other vendors or companies directing people to non-Microsoft patches -- third-party patches -- you understand the seriousness of this. Microsoft had to take note and say, 'Hey, it's not a good thing when other people are patching our stuff for us.

en We moved to do this immediately once the proper revenue streams could be secured. Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness. We have strong revenue streams for our embedded and mobile browsers. We will also create revenues from search, like other commercial browsers.

en It's not a question of whether or not you're going to need XML -- you're going to choose to use XML in the same way companies five years ago chose to use HTML and HTTP. Companies weren't dragged kicking and screaming to use browsers. They chose to use browsers.

en We really don’t have concerns. We've always had a partnership with Microsoft that allows us to understand their direction, and when it comes to broad, horizontal, basic services markets, they're great at it, ... If I want to be a partner of Microsoft, I can't have angst around Microsoft going after these broad, horizontal services.

This is the trouble when you have regulatory agencies make demands. They sometimes don't understand what's inherent in the demand. Microsoft can't create these documents overnight.

en It's hard to find technology that encompasses all browsers. Java could do that. Version 1.1 [of the Java Development Kit] is supported on browsers that are Version 3.0 and above on a PC. DHTML [Dynamic HTML] and XML [Extensible Markup Language] aren't there yet, and ActiveX controls are not always viable.

en We get a lot of browsers. Browsers sometimes end up becoming my best customers.

en There are a variety of ways people can market browsers. The question is: Are they effective ways to market browsers?

en Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

en Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

en That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.
