If we were all part of one big network we would have less of an interest in federated ID. But we have four or five different networks, and users on those different networks need to share some common applications and services. Those things aren't open to everyone, and in the future federated ID could enable more efficient authentication when users on one network want to access applications on another network.

The problem with the mobile Web experience has been that the networks being used are not very fast or very cheap to use. We allow mobile device users to download and carry the content with them, with any changes updated each time the application is used.

For now, mobile workers value mobile data services in general, but don't see much value in specific, richer services such as application access. Subscribers need better handsets and greater network bandwidth to take advantage of the full range of mobile data services. The sooner 3G or faster networks are in place and mobile workers acquire handsets with more powerful processors, more memory, better screens, and keyboards, the sooner explosive market growth can occur.

The strategic logic driving this transaction is compelling. The communications industry is at the beginning of a significant transformation of network technologies, applications, and services - one that is projected to enable converged services across service-provider networks, enterprise networks, and an array of personal devices. AOL owes its strong position in the mobile domain to its ability to provide seamless access to AIM buddy lists on handsets through an elegantly designed service and its strong relationships with mobile carriers. Its challenge is to demonstrate that it can use AIM as the foundation to engage users with a broader base of services, much as it is seeking to do on the desktop by opening access to its portal and e-mail services and linking these with AIM.

Microsoft's vision for streamlined network access enforcement at the desktop fits well with Extreme Networks' role in securing the network edge. The speed at which Extreme Networks is bringing along NAP technology integrated with the switched network infrastructure will help customers as they begin initial trials of Microsoft's Longhorn/Vista platforms later this year.
