In December, we reached a milestone for our company as we celebrated our 10-year anniversary as an independent publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. Over the past decade, our shareholders have been well rewarded with a 16 percent compound annual total return that handily exceeds the performance of the Standard & Poor's 500.

You can't guess. The decade of the '80s (for example) was a decade of great wealth creation and it averaged 17 percent a year, ... But if you missed 40 of the best days, your return was around 3 percent.

In 2005, we executed a dynamic drilling program, posted a 16.2 percent daily production increase, achieved a 35.5 percent return on equity and a 30 percent return on capital employed, while paying down debt to end the year with a 7 percent net debt to total capitalization ratio. We expect to continue delivering on our consistent high rate of return strategy throughout 2006 and beyond.

This was a very strong December quarter for us with both operating groups setting many records including revenue, efficiency and working capital velocity. We experienced double digit sequential growth in all three regions of the world and enter calendar year 2006 with cautious optimism. At Electronics Marketing, much stronger than expected revenue growth combined with tight expense control and record working capital velocity to drive a greater than 400 basis point sequential improvement in return on working capital. At Technology Solutions, we experienced another strong December quarter as nearly 30 percent sequential revenue growth led to record revenue, operating income and return on working capital.

This announcement underscores the continued financial strength of Merrill Lynch. Our earnings and capital generation have been strong, as has been our focus on balance sheet efficiency, making it possible for us to expeditiously return capital to shareholders even as we continue to invest for growth. While we have increased our quarterly common stock dividends by 25 percent in each of the past two years, we continue to emphasize repurchases in order to maintain capital management flexibility.

This confidence in business conditions also is reflected in the survey responses to the annual question regarding anticipated capital equipment expenditures. This year, 62 percent of supply chain managers plan to increase capital equipment expenditure in 2006; only 10 percent said they plan to cut back on capital expenditures. This is a marked difference from previous years, and suggests continued positive economic news for Arizona in the near term.

In our view, ROCE (return on capital employed) continues to be the best overall measure of financial performance given the long-term capital -intensive nature of our industry. I would be cautious of anyone who tries to de-emphasize it. Some seem to have focused on other metrics to guide what they view to be in the best interest of their shareholders.

I wanted to proceed according to a scientific approach, and we have been extremely cautious.

Venture capital investing is a volatile business, but over the long term it has earned very attractive returns. We have been in the venture capital business for more than 35 years. Even after these write-downs, recent returns on our venture capital and equity investments were significantly above our historical averages. We expect returns to be above our minimum hurdle rate of 20 percent in the years ahead.

We have to be extremely cautious and make sure that they really want to come and work every day. So far, we've had 100 percent participation.

Although strong revenue growth is expected, some industrial manufacturers are taking a more cautious approach concerning investments of capital and human resources, likely due to the lack of stability in energy costs.

For anything less than five years, you shouldn't be buying common stocks. You want a return of your capital as well as a return on your capital.
