The Chicago game was a big game for us establishing ourselves as a running football team. We started to get Ben back at that time, too, when he came back from his (knee and thumb) injuries.

We felt like before the season started, leaving out all the injuries, we felt like we were going to be a pretty good team. We started out slow due to injuries. It kind of set us back a little bit. But winning that home game (against the Boston Celtics), then going on a six-game road trip, that was either going to make us or break us. It was really going to determine our season. We were hungry, and we were really confident and went 5-1.

I think we all understand that a running game allows you to control the game. When we were able to run the football, that allows you to protect your defense and it allows you to do a lot of things that help you to win. We were very, very average running the football. And I think that always comes back to haunt you. I can guarantee you this spring that becomes an area that we must improve in, and we will.

Priority number one is no secret -- it's to get the running game back. We know we have a good quarterback in Drew. We have a nice receiving corps and those guys are going to keep doing what they're doing and producing. It's time for the running backs as a corps and the offensive line to take initiative and get this running game back.

Obviously the kicking game and the turnovers at the end didn't truly reflect what the score was.

Maybe if the team had been in a different situation, he might have tried to come back. I was really looking forward to playing with him. With all the injuries, it stayed in the back of my mind I was going to have a chance to play with him this year. ... I don't know if it's worth it to him to try to test the knee at this point.

It's a bump in the road for us in the process of his coming back. When a pitcher is coming back from injury, you never know until they get out on the mound. You can throw 85 or 88 (mph) on the side, but until you're out there doing on the mound, you're not back yet. It's like a football player with a knee injury. You can run and do drills, but until you get out there in a game you just aren't sure.

What I remembered was we just lost at Texas the week before on a last-second field goal. We came back a tired football team, but we got our legs back prior to the Florida State game, a Thursday night [ESPN-televised] game.

Normally, I think there would be a lot of pressure. But with the situation we're in right now, there's not as much. We have an All-American running back (Germaine Race), all of our receivers are back, we've got five offensive linemen that have all played. So, it's not like he has to go out and win a football game by himself.

They were a better football team than we were in every phase of the game tonight. I don't know what else to tell you. Competition is very simple: You either get better or you get worse. We don't have a choice. We will get better. We'll get back to work tomorrow, and the young kids filling in for injuries will get better. We're undefeated in the district, and we just have to move on.

I don't mean to be short, but we have dealt with this all year. I guess it was when the water hit me on the back when the game was over. That's it. There is nothing like seeing a quarterback take a knee. I love that play. That's my favorite play in football when John takes a knee. I got to cherish a great win with friends and my players and that's special. I couldn't find a better way to go out.
