And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, / Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, / And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? / And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: / The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? / And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? / But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? / Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, / And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? / When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? / But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: / And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? / And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3).

Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? / Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? / Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? / How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? / Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
