en A couple friends were going to volunteer last summer for the (Special Olympics Iowa) golf tournament. So I went along with them. It was a lot of fun.

en They have their own special park that acknowledges their effort. After we have a game in the summer, a lot of people will go out to the park and hang out there. It is another dimension of the Special Olympics instead of the Games and basketball tournament.

en It's an absolute blast, college golf. You're going tournament to tournament, playing for free, having a great time with a group of guys that you'll be friends with forever.

en It's probably going to be my last Olympics, that's why it's a little more special. The national team always has been a happy place for me. I really like our chances. You never know what's going to happen, that's why the tournament is so special. The gap between the No. 1 and No. 5 team is pretty much nothing. You're talking about two weeks of time. Whoever is going to be hot is going to have a great chance to win.

en Taylor just keeps playing well for us, meet after meet. Even though he's a freshman, he's played a lot of tournament golf in the summer. He does his job every meet and doesn't get nervous. His tournament experience has helped him a lot already this season.

en This is the fourth year that coach Bias has helped with our basketball skills Special Olympics events. He and the members of the basketball and soccer teams at Fairmont volunteer and give us tremendous support for the competitions.

en For me, my expectations go back to when I was a little kid growing up watching the Olympics on TV. I loved the Summer Games, particularly track and field. Everyone has their own special Olympic moment. My favorite moment was watching Michael Johnson win at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. That's it. That's my moment . . . big time . . . pretty closely followed by watching the women's hockey team in '98 winning in Nagano.

en Since Illinois is the birthplace of Special Olympics, the first Games were held in July 1968 at Chicago's Soldier Field, many groups felt there was a need for a physical tribute in this state to the athletes and the Special Olympics movement.
