We have had really spectacular profit reports, by and large, from most companies so far in this quarter. I think retail will be a disappointment, going forward. But, up until now, without any retailers, we've had a nice run. But people have been saying, you know, first of all, the growth rate has slowed from the first quarter to the second, and then the projections are that they will continue to slow down in the third and fourth quarters - we're coming up against really tough comparisons. Overall, I think what it shows is the fourth quarter, despite good profit numbers, in terms of overall economic growth was not a very strong finish to the year.

Growth in euro-land economies is starting to come through, particularly in the industrial sector. It looks to us as if there will be strong growth in the third and fourth quarter of around 1 percent.

The combination of strong growth in the U.S., euro zone and Japan at the same time is bearish for bonds, so it is not surprising that yields in all three regions have either just broken out of their recent ranges or are not far from doing so.

Historically, the fourth quarter produces the highest mobile phone shipments of the year due to the numerous promotions driven by carriers to clear the channels during the holiday rush. Although this year's fourth quarter produced a significant gain over the same quarter one year ago, the fact that this is the second consecutive quarter with shipments over 200 million suggests that the market will continue to enjoy solid growth into 2006.

This latest report is unmistakable evidence of an improving economy. What you have to look for is evidence that the fourth-quarter slowdown in economic growth will continue. And this jobs report is evidence that just the opposite is happening.
