Concrete Boots and The ordsprog

en Concrete Boots and The Fighter were the last two songs we wrote. It seems to be the way that our newer songs are always a lot better. We brought the riff in to practice and it was done in half-an-hour. Then the lyric all just came out easy after that.

en This album is the same balance we've always had with melodic, riff-based rock songs, but we brought in the programming aspect on this one. We worked with a string quartet on two different songs. We always approach each song individually, try to make the most of each song and bring it to life as much as possible.

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

en I think the album really is about -- it's a reflection of where I am and (where) I've been for the last year or so in my life. I choose my songs that way because I become the lyric. I mean, I live the songs before I record them.

en the recordings became bigger than the songs, which I came to understand is a backwards way of doing it. The songs have to come first and inspire everything else. If Rick did anything for me, he did that. He brought my focus back to the songs and made me feel comfortable about not worrying about how the recording of that particular song would be.

en The biggest thing to me is that ['Version 2.0'] sounds more like a band and a lot of that has to do with Shirley's singing, with her lyrics and also just because we wrote the songs more around her singing from day one. Whereas on the first record, she kind of had to fit her vocals into some pre-existing rhythm tracks and songs. This time almost all the songs started with her,

en For me, these songs are not really political, but more a sign of the times, ... I see them as songs of hope, songs with strong messages, songs that take on a new relevance today.

en I wrote songs with the guys from Air Supply for their record... So I was just writing songs.

en I feel like people have only heard half a record so far. But we like releasing shorter records. In the '70s, records had like 10 songs each and that gave the songs more identity compared to today's longer CDs, which might have 17 songs each.

en They're so picky about things with plays, and Fox has the rights to it. Maybe there be a version of it we can do. I can put a clause in my contract of the songs I wrote where maybe I'll get to do the songs here. Years later, maybe it can go on the road if it's a hit. If it isn't, we'll bring it here immediately.

en We're opening, so it's just an hour — we'll choose the songs that suit the slot. Sometimes it's three songs, sometimes it's only two.

en We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.

en It actually took several months to pare the songs down. It is essentially the best songs taken from each album that we made, what we would consider the highlights. And then we edited our choices down to the point that we wouldn't have an eight-hour concert.

en The last song we wrote together, he went to a chord I was about to go to. I'm going to that chord and he was there already. It shows in the music. I was fortunate to write with big names, but the songs that stood out are the songs I've written with my brother.

en I looked through our catalog year by year, and I saw that there were pockets of time when we wrote some terrific songs. Then all of a sudden, we'd go for another two or three months and there weren't great songs. Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process. I looked through our catalog year by year, and I saw that there were pockets of time when we wrote some terrific songs.
