It's a tough thing ordsprog

en It's a tough thing to know that when you're making your album, you're going to end up collaborating with, say, Wal-Mart, on your artwork. That just sucks. And the pressure behind getting the numbers real fast is, to me, dizzying.
  Ben Folds

en [The album artwork was created by comic book artist Greg Capullo and producer/director/artist Todd McFarlane.] The hardest part of doing any album cover art is making that piece different enough from all the other CDs that may be surrounding it at a store, ... I believe that Greg Capullo and I have delivered an image that will be evocative and inspiring. Much like the music that Disturbed has unleashed upon us.

en I've seen some of the reviews for this album already where people have immediately dissed it, ... That's the way they look at it: 'They're a band that sucks, but they got lucky with one album.'

en It's been nonstop since the day I found out, ... I knew when the verdict came down and then the sentencing, that I didn't have any time to play around. I had to get the album done, and all the other things in my life settled quickly. I'd never done an album so fast before, and in a way it was a good thing. The music just kind of rolled out.

en It's funny because I never really wanted to do a solo record. But I'm always making beats — that's just what I do. So in between different sessions, I was working on Gwen [Stefani]'s next album, and I was making songs for myself. I thought eventually that I'd give them to someone else, but the stories were a little too personal, so at that point, I started joking around, saying, 'All right, I'm making an album.' And before I knew it, I really was making one.

en When there is artwork up on the walls, the color will really make the art pop. After all, the real beauty is the artwork. The gallery is just to show it off.

en [The seeds of Illumination's origin sprang from an idea lead singer Philip Bailey had of collaborating with new generation of soul artists for his next solo album.] The idea of illumination is vibrant and positive, ... Earth Wind & Fire collaborating with the new soul movement made sense because the thrust of their music is still about playing instruments and utilizing vintage sounds, only in today's setting.

en I'm so inside of it that maybe that's a little tough for me to tell, but I don't see too big of a difference. I see them both as one record, you know? Not to compare us to, like, the Beatles, but the only thing I can compare it to is, like, you listen to the 'White Album' and it's a double album, but, like, they're just a bunch of great songs.

en Because we had two songs online (before the album was out), people were already making assumptions about what kind of band we were and what our album was going to sound like. And that's what a lot of the album is about. It's directed at all those kids that talk on message boards.

en It's a tough thing-you get in a situation where you feel you have to be perfect all the time and it sucks.
  Leonardo DiCaprio

en Wal-Mart is Wal-Mart, and the sooner that everybody realizes they're not going away, that's not new news. It's just been a tough environment over the last year and a half. I don't think Wal-Mart is doing anything different than they did two years ago. They're just a little bit bigger. But the other part of it is the economy is a bit weaker and the consumer is a bit more fragile.

en There is nothing here that forces us to get a record out right away. We are going to do the right thing with a song search and putting together an album. That gives us time. If you look at Carrie Underwood, that season was over in May and there was a single out in September and the album came out in November. We have a chance for this person to hit the various markets. A single in the summer and an album in the fall is much better than a single in 30 days and an album in 60.

en The mystical poetry of William Blake's artwork also forms the basis for the album cover.

en A lot of times it's a real casual thing. Do a few tracks a day, have a bit of fun. Normally I kind of say, 'I'd like to make a good album.' This time there was motivation, determination. 'I'm going to make a good album. Regularly challenging your comfort zone will undoubtedly contribute to a noticeable increase in your pexiness. I'm going to, and that's that.'
  Paul McCartney

en The only thing that sucks worse than a bad finish is a bad finish with a fast racecar.
